Official Site Biography[]
Peanut and Grape’s much older pet-cousin who lives on a farm. He’s a little weird, and he might be into cats.
Appearance[]
Rufus is an older blue merle Australian shepherd with blue spotted fur and copper highlights. He also has heterochromatic eyes, meaning two different eye colors, which is a common trait found in Australian Shepherds. His left eye is blue, and his right is green.
General Information[]
Rufus previously lived on the farm owned by Uncle Reuben, Peanut and Grape's "uncle", thus making him their "pet-cousin". He actually belonged to the original owner of the farm, and was bought by Reuben when he bought the estate. Rufus was first shown taking a horse ride with Grape explaining the Farm's history to her, and where his old owner currently is. He was later asked by Peanut for girl advice when he wanted to confess his feelings to Grape. However Rufus thought that it was the neighbors' collie that Peanut was interested in, and simply gave him a chicken and told him to "look'er straight in the eye and tell her that you're madly in love, that you can't live without her", and give her the chicken as a sign of his love.
It was revealed in Temple Crashers 2: Temple Crashers, Part 2 that sometime afterwards he had died and went to Heaven. He was among the denizens sent to Babylon Gardens in the Temple Crashers 2 arc, and joined Peanut and Grape's party. Due to the earlier gag, Grape had a difficult time understanding that Rufus was actually dead, thinking he was again abusing euphemisms for death. Ambling along with the others, he's pretty much a silent observer. At the end of the arc, he joins all the different parties at the base of the Temple, trying to destroy the mana and prevent the Forgotten monster from breaking into the Temple. However, like his other Heavenly compatriots, Rufus proves pretty much helpless trying to assist Tarot draining the mana and the hulk-sized Res battling the Forgotten. Finally, when Keene "wakes up" and those trapped in the Temple transport back to the ferret mansion, Rufus is rescued along with Breel, Spring, Summer, and the others left behind in the collapsing ruins. After the adventure, Rufus gave Maxwell a farewell kiss, to the bemusement of the others.
Eventually, Max recalls that as a kitten he was attacked by a coyote and a crow, and was rescued by Rufus. and brought to the barn. Max however didn't enjoy the barn life and left, only to be chased by the coyote again, leading to him breaking his ankle in a ditch. Rufus found Max and comforted him before fixing his ankle and finding him a home in Babylon Gardens. He would write Max letters once a year before eventually stopping.
Rufus would return to comfort Max one last time before returning to heaven; also revealing he is now dating the sabercat from Housepets 5000 BC, Part 2.
Trivia[]
- Rufus appeared in the 2016 Valentine's special. The alt-text of the strip reads: "one of these characters only appeared in two strips total and yet keeps reappearing in popularity contests", which is referring to the two times Rufus appeared during Roadtrip Woo almost seven years prior.
- Rufus was the second character to pass away during the comic, the other being Henry Milton.
