Grape Jelly Sandwich is one of the two main protagonists in Housepets! along with her pet brother Peanut. She was the second character to be introduced in the first arc of the series Imaginate!

Being one of the two original main characters, Grape has had the most amount of appearances in the series (with Peanut having the second most).

Original Site Biography[]

You shouldn’t expect too much effort from Grape. While she has a creative spark in her own right, she would much rather fall back on tried and true methods, such as violence. It hasn’t garnered her many close friends, and only recently she decided to open herself up to the cat community of Babylon Gardens.

Even though she’s younger, she often acts as the big sister to Peanut, given that she’ll refrain from hurting him even if he’s bothersome (for the most part) and even try to intervene on his behalf. This is part of what gets Grape into trouble so often.

She has ongoing disputes with the neighborhood dogs, mostly out of her disdain for them, but also because she can dance circles around them for fun, and rarely get much more than an angry stare or attempted beat-down. She can’t do anything about the balance of power, but it doesn’t matter to her, it’s just something else to pass the time.

Her boyfriend is Maxwell and they make much snuggles.

Physical Appearance[]

Grape is a cat covered in odd purple fur, the only exceptions being her underbelly, muzzle, and inner-ears. She wears a light-purple collar with an orange fish tag, and has yellow eyes.

She is seen wearing a blue scarf during cold weather.

Personality[]

Looking at Grape from the outside, she doesn't seem to be as outgoing as her brother Peanut. But given the proper moments, she has proven to be brave and creative, though she can be sassy and sarcastic at times. She has tomboyish tendencies, to the point where Peanut nor the neighborhood pets didn't know she was a girl at first. When she was a kitten she was abandoned by her previous family, and still suffers from the trauma. Grape is usually very friendly and easy to get along with, even with the dogs of the neighborhood, although she's not above resorting to violence and threats to fix problems however--such as hitting Bino in the head with a frying pan or threatening King with dismemberment for hitting on her brother's girlfriend. She is also an avid napper, and hates it when Peanut wakes her up prematurely.

As much as Peanut annoys her, deep down she truly cares for him, and she admitted to him that they were "more than best friends." She acts like a big sister to him, explaining something he doesn't understand, or playing with him in their Imaginate! games, though this hasn't stopped her from attacking him when he wakes her from her naps.

A recurring gag involves her forming crushes on those she finds "hunky," such as buff cats in tribal wear, handsome foreign leopards or even stacked canines, and even claims to have a "hunk sense." Grape is also a big fan of The Pridelands books and often writes embarrassing "saucy" fan-fiction of it (which Peanut often finds.)

General Information[]

Grape, along with her brother Peanut were the first characters to appear in the comic. They are owned by Earl Sandwich and his wife Jill Sandwich (who they refer to as their parents.) Grape was adopted from a shelter by the Sandwich family (having been abandoned by her previous family) when she was a young kitten, under the name "Princess Periwinkle," before being named "Grape Jelly" to go along with Peanut (and due to the Sandwich family's history of "theme naming.") When she was a kitten, she hung out with the neighborhood dogs more than the cats; at once point she even rescued Fox and Maxwell from a creepy man trying to feed them to his pet alligator.

Peanut and Grape were the focus for the majority of the early days of the comic; only rarely appearing without one another, often playing Imaginate! games together, and Peanut constantly frustrating Grape by waking her from her frequent naps. She is also the one of the only people who reads Peanut's Spot (Superdog) comics (aside from Joey) and as such she's its only critic.

Grape began the series as "one of the dogs" mostly due to her association with them via Peanut, as well as her ability to outwit them with almost no effort required. She was one of the many characters known to put Bino in his place, often with violence (such as hitting him with a frying pan.)

Peanut didn't learn that Grape was a girl until Cat Tail, at which point he developed a crush on her, however Peanut failed to act on his feelings in time. Grape, feeling insecure about the fact she generally hangs out with dogs, asks Maxwell out. Even though their first date seemed not to be going well, Max manages to salvage it with tickets to a Pridelands movie. The two officially became a couple and have remained dating ever since.

In Imaginate, Too!, during one of their Imaginates! Peanut became jealous that Grape was ignoring him in favor for Max which led to a fight that ended their game early. Grape spoke to Peanut about his crush on her; confirming she had known for a long time as Peanut was terrible at hiding it, (as well as discovering the picture of Fido and Sabrina they took, colored over with their fur colors.) While Grape admits that she harbors no romantic feelings towards him, as she much prefers other felines, she states that they are and always have been more than best friends and can continue being "mushy" together--ending Peanut's crush.

One night, Grape has a dream where she meets a gryphon named Pete, and is left with a giant blue feather. It turns out Pete was a celestial being trying to acquire her as an avatar for his upcoming game of Universes & Unrealities, which was thwarted by his sister Spirit Dragon and Peanut's new girlfriend Tarot. After accidentally freeing Pete from his temple, Grape and Peanut were constantly on look out for Pete, until they finally gave up in It's A Wonderful Dog's Life.

While at a Pridelands author signing, Grape meets a cat named Res Auburn at the bookstore's coffee shop. She soon figures out that Res is the true author of the Pridelands series--his owner releases the books under her name. After falsely believing Res' owner is mistreating him, Grape confronts her, but she soon realizes that it doesn't add up. Res explains in a letter that he has always been shy and he would love to have a friend like her, giving her his phone number.

Like most of the neighborhood pets, she attended King's wedding, and caught Max off guard by suggesting they get married someday. During Jungle Fever her "hunk sense" was set off by Jata. Sabrina had Grape act as her boyfriend to trick him so she wouldn't get married, but Jata dismissed it entirely, even making Grape faint when he explodes out of his suit.

Grape's next major role was in the Housepets 5000 BC saga when she helped a canine named Satau who had been accidentally transported from the past. After a spell to send him home went awry, Grape ends up in the past with the others. She is eventually kidnapped by Satau's rival, a tribal cat named Ptah. Despite impressing her with his muscular figure, she turns him down, saying she'd rather take someone "sweet and considerate" over an "arrogant jerk with a stupid hat." She is eventually rescued by Peanut and Max, and returns to the present.

After puppy-sitting for King and Bailey (and dealing with Peanut's paranoia that they lost one of the pups), Grape is visited by Res who is suffering from writer's block. Eventually, they join a LARP event along with Peanut, Res, Max their deceased cousin Rufus to explore the temple, wearing paper bags like in their Imaginate! games. Grape and Max use their paper bags to turn into ninjas, and make their way through the temple. They manage to reach the bottom first, but soon events transpire which cause the temple to start to collapse. After escaping through Dallas, Grape worries about Res, who was left behind, but he reappears perfectly fine. She escorts him back to the airport (and missing the one chance to see his were-tiger form again.)

Grape, along with many of the other pets, become trapped at a hot springs, where she learns the story of how Rufus and Max first met, and help stabilize Peanut and Tarot's relationship. Later she and Peanut open a daycare at their home without their parents knowledge, where they pull off their biggest Imaginate! ever: Jurassic Park.
