Heaven is the celestial plane where the virtuous (good) half of every mortal soul comes to rest in the afterlife. It is led by the celestial Bahamut, with the assistance of other celestials like Cerberus. The counterpart of Heaven is Pandemonium, where the evil half of every mortal soul is discarded.

General Information[]

In HECKRAISER, nine years after Heaven was introduced in the comic, the demon Eudoant explains what happens to mortal souls after they die. Upon death, the soul is split into two parts: one is the good part of the mortal, and one is evil. The bad or evil half goes to Pandemonium, whereas the good or virtuous half goes to Heaven. The only example of the two halves of the mortal soul in the comic is Breel and Negabreel, who used to be one combined mortal soul.

Heaven

The first depiction of Heaven

Heaven was first introduced in the Not All Dogs arc when Pete the Gryphon breaks into the Chambers of Spirit in order to steal King's fate. Cerberus, another celestial, is also introduced as Heaven's guardian, but it was only revealed later that she is also the so-called "messenger", tasked with bringing souls to Heaven after death. The celestial Bahamut was introduced as the judge to Pete's trial during The Trial in Heaven, and later he was shown to be in charge of Heaven in the Heaven's Not Enough story arcs where King is granted an audience with him.

Heaven is the most perfect place in the cosmos. Everyone who lives there lives in eternal happiness and is never left wanting for anything. They have massage parlors, water parks and spas, ice cream, and probably anything else you could wish for. While visiting Heaven, Keene Milton comments that everyone is happy and perfect because they have so much time, and that nothing he can do will ever make earth as perfect as Heaven. Keene turned out to be wrong, however, since the citizens of Heaven are happy and perfect just because they are the good part of every mortal soul, without any of the evil.

During Heavendropper, it was revealed that Heaven is "timeless". What this seems to imply is that every mortal soul is already in Heaven, including dead, living, and not yet born. For this reason, Fox Lindberg was able to meet his future self from Heaven: Winter. The angel Spring explains that this doesn't usually happen because of "causality violations".

Denizens of Heaven[]

The Denizens of Heaven are the good and virtuous half of the deceased mortals. They are first tagged in Open Up The Pearly Gates, although they appeared earlier as "innocent bystanders" in the Not All Dogs arc. The residents of heaven have shown to be omniscient, or all-knowing. For instance, Spring and Summer wrote a letter to Fox that predicted Sabrina's Christmas party several months before it would actually happen, and it was delivered to him at just the right time so that he wouldn't miss it. Their appearance is also variable since they can completely change it at any time. Most of the denizens seen in the comic are non-human mammals, although this may be partly by choice. Citizens can choose to haunt the earth or even incarnate, but this is rare. It also appears to be the home of the Celestials, both known, such as Cerberus, and unknown, like the Chimaera at the gates to the orientation tour.

Spring and Summer Spring and Summer

Spring and Summer
Two husky angels that Fox met in heaven and who accompanied him on his visit during Heaven's Not Enough, Part 2. Spring is pink and usually sports angel wings, while Summer is "the color of lime sherbet". Both might be formal mortals, but their past is unknown. They seem to have become infatuated with Fox during his stay, and they spend a whole six months together in heaven. Unfortunately, he could not remember them when he returned to Earth.

At the beginning of the Temple Crashers 2 arc, Sabrina goes to Fox's home to draft him into Tarot's team and finds the two huskies snuggling all over him. They had been sent to Earth to assist Tarot's team while they attempted to drain the mana pool in Pete's Temple. After the whole affair was over, they got to have one last snuggle session with Fox before they were called back to heaven, but told him they would see him again very soon once more (not because he was gonna die, though).

Breel

Breel
Breel is a pine marten who worked at a massage parlor in Heaven staffed by various heavenly mustelids. He meets Keene Milton during The 4 Animals You Meet In Heaven, and accompanies him throughout the arc, helping him return to earth. He is shown to develop a fascination with Keene, and treats him with a degree of affection that sometimes causes him to blush. The two become close, but Keene is eventually sent back to earth.

Later, in the Temple Crashers 2 arcs, Breel materializes in Keene's office, explaining that he has come to Earth to make sure he doesn't do anything stupid at Pete's temple. Unfortunately, Keene does end up doing something stupid, unleashing the Forgotten and sending Breel to Pandemonium. When Keene goes to save him, they kiss, showing their love for each other and freeing them from their imprisonment. They all return safe and sound, and when Cerberus comes to take Breel back to Heaven, he asks to be reincarnated so that he can stay with Keene. They live together now in Babylon Gardens.

Rufus

Rufus
Rufus is Peanut and Grape's pet-cousin, an elderly Australian Shepherd they meet on their visit to Reuben Sandwich's farm back in 2009. Rufus does not appear again until 2017, having died at some point after the visit and gone to Heaven. In Temple Crashers 2, now wearing a halo, he returns to earth and joins up with Peanut, Grape, Maxwell, and Res to help them safely empty the mana pool in Pete's Temple. When they return home safely, Rufus reveals that he didn't come to see his pet cousins, but actually to see Maxwell. Their relationship is fully explained later on in The Maxwell Thing.

Fox's mom and King's mom Fox's mom and King's mom

Fox's mom and King's mom
They both appear briefly in One Person You Meet In Heaven. Before seeing his mother, Fox is overwhelmed with the feeling that he's back in the barn where he was born. This could imply that Fox's only memories of his mother are from the time shortly after he was born. Fox's mother closely resembles Bailey. King's mother then appears, adressing King by his human name "Joel" and immediately recognizing him despite his new corgi form. Embarassed to be discovered by his mother as a dog, a blushing King tries to explain his situation. She assures him she isn't surprised though, only amused to see that she lost a previous bet with his father.

Keene's mom and Henry Milton Keene's mom and Henry Milton

Keene's mom and Henry Milton
During the arc The 4 Animals You Meet In Heaven, Keene meets his birth mother, her being the third animal he meets. Upon seeing her, he unconsciously turns into a younger self, presumably because that's the way he remembers himself when his mother was still alive. She comforts him and they spend some time together before Cerberus brings them to meet the fourth animal: Henry Milton, Keene's deceased owner or "dad" who was a human on earth, but chose to become a ferret in Heaven. Henry Milton helps Keene realize that he fights for animal rights not just because he wants to make him proud, but because he wants to make life better for his family and friends. Keene's mom and Henry are also introduced to each other and become quite flirtatious. After a brief farewell, Cerberus returns Keene to earth.

Trivia[]

  • The alt-text to the strip A Life Well-Lived has Rick explaining that Heaven is experienced subjectively, so Breel only understands things in a way that he can relate to from his previous life on earth in the 1800's, meaning that he doesn't actually know what a cell phone is despite having one. Alternatively, Rick suggests that the reader "shut up and roll with it".
  • The strip Straight To The Top hints at the hierarchy of Heaven, with "The Almighty" on top, presumably Bahamut. Following that are "The Seraphim", "The Virtues", and "The Principalities", but it's unclear who they are.
